101 Things You Didn’t Know about Richmond Park

Walled in by Charles I in the 1630s for deer hunting, Richmond Park’s boundaries are little changed today. It’s the largest Royal Park, containing 130,000 trees, and has 700 deer. Tim Harrison’s talk will cover 101 surprising facts about the 2,360-acre space on our doorstep, including the wife of the park’s first keeper painting its first picture, and who the Isabella Plantation is named after.
Tim edits Surbiton’s local paper, The Good Life, and spent much of his childhood climbing Richmond Park’s wall at the end of his garden.

Who visited our area, and why did they come? The Portsmouth Road, grand houses, the railways and Sandown Park all played major roles. Simon Fowler is currently undertaking a PhD thesis that will inform his talk.

Stephen is a former Racing Manager at Sandown Park, and has written a comprehensive history of the racecourse’s eventful lifetime. He will present highlights from the research, dipping into his trove of photographs from times past.

EDLHS member Chris has carried out extensive research into the Drake family, who lived at Esher Place from 1583 until the 1630s. Drake versus Drake will be the first book to emerge from this work, and it’s a sensational story.
